Net Zero Growth in the UK

Last week, a report commissioned by the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit, containing analysis completed by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), showed that Britain's net zero economy has become a powerhouse of job creation and economic expansion, with the net zero sector growing three times faster than the overall UK economy. In 2024, there were 22,800 net zero businesses, with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) making up 94% of the sector. These businesses have generated £28.8 billion for the UK economy and also support 273,000 full-time jobs - that's more jobs than the telecommunications industry provides.

And that's only part of the story. When looking at supply chain activities, the sector's economic impact leaps to £83 billion, supporting nearly one million jobs across the UK, equalling 2.9% of total UK employment. What's more, net zero jobs are 40% more productive than the national average, and the average annual wage in the businesses is £43,000 - that's £5,600 higher than the national average. It's safe to say, these aren't just more jobs - they're better jobs. And they're widespread: rather than being solely concentrated in London and the South East of the country, major hotspots are seen in the West Midlands, Yorkshire and the Humber, and South West England.

This demonstrates incredible progress for net zero and illustrates its significance for future growth in the UK. Indeed, the report concludes: "the net zero economy is not only driving environmental progress but also delivering transformative economic and social benefits across the UK.”

This report also drives home that there is no better time to get on board with net zero than right now - progress is happening quickly, and the risk grows daily in being left behind.
